Integrative Approaches to Technology and Society

This course explores how society, culture, and understanding of the human condition shape and are shaped by technological development. It focuses on the study of interdependent and institutionalized systems of law, economics, culture and technology, exploring the conditions of stability and instability in these systems. We will survey the available theories and methods for understanding large scale socio-technological systems.

The final paper requires us to select one topic from one weekly reading from the textbook(Sergio Sismondo (2011) An Introduction to Science and Technology Studies. Malden, MA: Wiley-Blackwell.). My topic is that science and
technology expertise knowledge need to be spread so that the general public can take participation in the relevant science and technology decisions.

I acknowledge that scientific knowledge needs to be popularized, and that complex and
difficult technical knowledge ought to be simplified in the dissemination process for the general
public to gain a better understanding of how the contemporary scientific society and the correct
application of science and technology develop. Despite this, I am not fully supportive of public
involvement in the major social science and technology decisions.

The information society is still in fast-paced development, and the Internet has been
accepted as the mainstream channel for scientific and technological knowledge to be
popularized. Whether it is politics, business or daily life, science and technology have been made
integral. Therefore, it is a necessary trend to popularize and simplify scientific and technological
knowledge in the current society, as a result of which the public can gain a better understanding
and get adaptive to the correct application of science and technology. From a historical
perspective, the major decisions have never been made without public involvement. However,
the involvement of the general public could not play the most significant role.

Understand the cultural history of information as a concept as it has developed and influenced society through creative representations. Apply different analytical methods to the critical reading of cultural texts such as films, advertisements, video games, and works of fiction. Formulate and articulate a critical reading of cultural texts in formal academic writing.

The topic of final creative essay I select is the analysis of gameplay in different video games. . An important factor in whether a game makes players feel good or not lies in its story and the type of play. Game type “evolution” is similar to biological species. Therefore, the innovation in video game genres is understood as either exploring new areas by creating new genres, or taking the current mechanics to the next level and bringing the existing genres to a new era. As for video games, we come up with two standards, which are standards related to game play and standards related to themes or stories. I discuss  two different types of game play - The Evil Within and Heavy Rain.

For the possession of The Evil Within, the third person shooting linear world play style combined with horrible game atmosphere and strange monsters, revealing the truth of the STEM world through the itinerary of solving puzzles. This
explains why The Evil Within become 3A masterpieces. For Heavy Rain, it represents the real arrival of interactive drama games. Heavy Rain is a work worthy of every player who loves interactive drama, because everyone will play different stories, and that's your own story.  The emergence of interactive drama also embodies a future development in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the field of video games. In the future we will learn about more excellent and vivid stories and various novel ways of game playing to produce more creative works.
