Design Essay
​Description
The Family Tracking Pad is a screen display device which is similar to iPad. The function of it is to track the activities of family members. For example, where did the family go? What did the family do? The family member’s phone needs to connect with the pad first. When one family member is ready to go out, the pad will automatically update his/her activities through the phone, then other family members can browse it to learn about your activities. The whereabouts of family members are always the most concerned thing for each family member. The Family Tracking Pad can prevent other family members for the potential risk from getting safety information about their trips.
Personas & Story
The two personas are created. The first person is Harry who is an international student from China studying in Canada, so he spent little time with his family. The second person is Harry’s little brother Caspar who is a high school student in China. He loves playing computer games and watching anime. The two brothers are on good terms and used to play together until Harry went abroad. Harry planned to surprise his family by sneaking home without telling them. However, when Harry got home, he found that there was no one at home and his parents had not left work. His brother's high school was over for an hour, but he was not at home. Therefore, he looked at the pad in the porch of the door to know that Caspar went to the Internet bar to play with his classmates. Harry decided to join them happily.
Rationale & Reaction
The Family Tracking Pad is fixing on the wall which is near the main door of your house or condo suite. When family members leave the house, their itineraries can be updated on the pad. When a family member comes home and finds that the rest of the family is away, they can see their itineraries on the pad. When an older member of the family notices that the child is missing, if they see the information in the pad, the parents will be reassured. The device in the design touch screen in the gateway is simple and reasonable, touch screen is easy to operate and can directly view information. Pad placed in the porch is also considered to be the only place where family members go out, and the first place where family members want to know other people's information when they return home.
